Mozzy 'Children of the Slums' Review
My review's are more personal, than professional so consider this an album of the week type beat.
On April 19, 2024 Sacramento Hip Hop artist Mozzy, FKA Lil’ Tim, released his 8th full length studio LP and second under Collective Music Group/Interscope Records. Children of the Slums was written and produced by Dave-O, Jaywavy and Julian Cannon and features the likes of Fridayy, Eric Bellinger, E Mozzy, Celly Ru, and Afira in a 17-track ensemble that encapsulates some of my favorite themes of Gangsta Rap: grief, survival, and triumph.
The album opens with dual messages of loss in Damn and Still Hurt, mellow tracks where Mozzy pours his heart out over fair weather friends and lost loved ones. Themes of loss echo throughout this project, from mentors in Free Juju to absent brotherly figures in Miss Big Bruh.
Loss isn’t the only theme of this project Children of the Slums is one of survival. Mozzy’s wordplay and lyricism through Lost it All, I Can’t Go Out, and If I Die Right Now are powerful and introspective. He paints a triumphant picture that’s reinforced later on through Jaded and Living Proof.
You don’t have to live the lifestyle Mozzy’s lived to resonate with the messages woven into Children of the Slums. If you’ve experienced heavy loss, endured battles with grief, achieved triumphs in spite of enormous pitfalls this may be the album for you.
